When will the NHL playoffs start in 2020?

The Stanley Cup 2020 playoff qualification starts on Saturday August 1st. The Rangers and Hurricanes start the qualifying round with a Saturday matchup at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario. The last matches in both qualifying and the round robin round will take place on Sunday, August 9th.

The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs officially begins on Tuesday August 11th. The teams will be reinstated after the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

How do the NHL playoffs work?

Before the official Stanley Cup playoffs start on August 11th, there are a few bells and whistles that determine the qualification and seeding in both conferences. This is how it will work:

The four best teams from each conference play in round robin style to determine the seed for the top spots in the playoffs. Each team plays against each other once, which corresponds to six games between August 2 and August 9. The games are played according to the rules of the regular season for overtime and shootings. The remaining eight teams in each conference play in a best-of-five series to qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs. Sowing is based on the regular seasonal scoring. These games are played according to the overtime rules in the playoffs (golden goal). After completing the qualifying rounds and the round robin game, the teams reach the first round of the Stanley Cup 2020 playoffs. As usual, the highest seeds play the lowest seeds, with sowing again after both the first and the second round. Each series from the first round to the last horn of the Stanley Cup final consists of seven games per usual with the two of the NHL hub cities in which the first two rounds take place. The conference finale and Stanley Cup final will take place at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alta.
